This training is designed to combine basic astronomy skills and knowledge with a strong grounding in Kenya’s ecological and cultural heritage.

Training Components:

1. Accessible Astronomy

This module of the training offers a hands-on approach into the fundamentals of astronomy from the equator. Learn the basics of equatorial astronomy, orientation, and night sky movement, exploring the different kinds of celestial objects visible in the night sky and the science behind them. This is done through hands-on, practical sessions focused on using binoculars to observe objects in the night sky, and incorporating digital tools for planning and conducting stargazing events.

2. Ecological awareness

This segment explores the nocturnal habitat from an ecological perspective, understanding the vital role of the night in sustaining wildlife and ecosystems. Explore the significance of natural darkness and the impact of light pollution on both wildlife and human well-being. This module sheds light on the impacts of light pollution on specific wildlife species in Kenya as well as on general ecosystem dynamics, and how preserving the integrity of the night sky contributes to the overall health of ecosystems.

3. Kenyan cultural heritage

This part of the training explores the rich tapestry of Kenyan cultural perspectives of the night sky. Delve into stories and beliefs about the cosmos from various tribes by learning about Kenyan cultural astronomy, ethnoastronomy, and tribal night sky stories to deepen your understanding of diverse the diverse cultural beliefs surrounding the night sky. Knowledge of the cultural heritage of the region through the lens of the night sky adds a unique local perspective to any night sky experience.

Note: The pilot rate of USD 950 is a special introductory offer for the initial training phase. Higher rates may apply in the future.

The training is spread out over 4 days with daytime lectures and practical evening sessions. There is a final assessment on the last day, where guide skills are assessed.

Participants receive a certificate upon completion. Ongoing support includes access to a community forum, updates on astrotourism trends, and access to refresher trainings.

Lodges will receive marketing support and resources post-training. At the pilot stage, they will also receive a free experience design consultation, with an implementation structure, and guidance on effectively marketing the astrotourism experience.
